The Australian Picture Framing Industry is a dynamic and exciting sector. It is constantly evolving and re-inventing itself. It is a young industry that presents many opportunities.

The industry as a whole can be broken down into the following categories:

• Wholesale materials and machinery distributors and importers; - These businesses supply most of the framing materials to the industry. They are warehouses.
  
• Wholesale material manufacturers; - These businesses supply locally manufactured materials to the wholesale distributors. They are industrial factories.
  
• Wholesale picture framing manufacturers; -These businesses manufacture large numbers of picture frames for the commercial sector. They work on high turnover and low profit margins. They are usually small factories in light industrial areas.

We had been in the Picture framing industry for six years before establishing Complete Framing. Before going ahead we analysed the industry to ascertain where we wanted to fit in. We understood that there are risks involved in establishing any business. Our objective was to understand the industry dynamics in order to be successful. We considered the risks and returns of each sector and finally modeled our franchises on category 4 - Retail sales and manufacture of picture frames. Some of the reasons for doing so were:

Low turnover and high profit appealed to us - we didn't want you to have to work long hours.

More small customers spreading the risk makes sense - We once established a wholesale manufacturing picture framing business that relied on a handful of large customers. When one customer went elsewhere we lost over 25% of our income overnight (and devalued the business overall).

We are able to target our services to the upper end of the market by positioning our shops well - something we can't do in a shopping centre. This increases our average sale price as well as the number of sales per month.

We are able to obtain excellent premises with good exposure at reasonable rates. We are able to keep our cost of sales to a minimum (and gross profit to a maximum) by manufacturing goods on site.

By being a sales and manufacturing outlet we have more control over the end product and therefore the service that we are able to offer our customers.

Complete Framing is a franchised, retail picture framing business. The managing director is Andrew Scott, a qualified picture framer and qualified picture framing tutor with over 20 years experience in establishing and growing small business.

Complete Framing was established in March 1998 and evolved until a pilot franchise was set up in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast in June 2001, promoting quality picture framing and superior customer service

Complete Framing Maroochydore has traded exceptionally well since then. Initially, Andrew Scott operated it and achieved a gross profit of 71% (which is almost unheard of. Most retailers are happy to achieve 50%)

Complete Framing Maroochydore was sold in May 2004 and is still growing as a normal franchise.

Each studio has a stylish look and feel. They consist of a showroom, consultation area, office area and a manufacturing area.

Franchisees are being sought with an aptitude for marketing, sales, customer service, business development and the practical ability to learn how to manufacture picture frames. These people may be individuals, partnerships or husband and wife teams.
